Happy Take Care Tuesday! Today we ponder and meditate upon the Words of Thomas Merton and our #AdventWord #Grace. Today's Saint of the Day is Thomas Merton. #Grace and Thomas Merton definitely go hand in hand. So that is why we are pairing the two tonight. It is for that very reason we are using the lessons for his feast day and foregoing our journaling and synonym work tonight. So let us begin our time of meditation.

Loving God, on this weighty day, we call to you in distress and anxiety, asking you to give us the clarity of purpose that we need to steer us through these difficult times. Every day, as we listen to the arguments of those who lead us, we are waiting and praying, wondering what our futures will hold. Remind us that even when things seem hopeless, we are still your beloved ones, eternally enfolded in your loving embrace, resting in your mercy, and guided by your truth. Grace abounds. You are with us, and you are good - all the time. Amen.

Merciful God, who sent your messengers the prophets to preach repentance and prepare the way for our salvation: Give us grace to heed their warnings and forsake our sins, that we may greet with joy the coming of Jesus Christ our Redeemer; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. God as we begin our season of Advent and preparation for your Son' Jesus's birth may we be united again with him and each other.

Cuthbert, a shepherd lad looking after his flock on the Lammermuir hills, had an angelic vision coinciding with the death of Aidan which convinced him that he was meant to follow Christ as surely as the beloved founder of Lindisfarne Abbey. He became a monk at Melrose Abbey, under the guidance of Boisil. Cuthbert later succeeded him as Prior. Later in his life Cuthbert became a dearly-loved bishop at Lindisfarne, from where, until his death in 687, he loved to retreat in solitude to pray and fast on the Farne Islands.

Thomas Merton was a lonely man until he found God and his loneliness turned to solitude. This led him to a monastic life of contemplation and compassion. He became a spiritual guide for Trappist scholars and novices – and for his reading public. He was hungry for human intimacy, but even more hungry for intimacy with God. ‘True solitude is deeply aware of the world’s needs. It does not hold the world at arm’s length,’ he wrote. The actual Christian task involves ‘accepting ourselves as we are in our confusion, infidelity, disruption, ferment, and even desperation.’ ‘The monk is not defined by his task, his usefulness: in a certain sense he is supposed to be useless, because his mission is not to do this or that job but to be a man of God.’
My God, by Your grace, turn my loneliness to solitude that I may know You more and more. Help me to accept myself with all my contradictions, and to accept others as those made in Your own image. May I learn to be and not only to do, and so please You, Lord. Amen.
