MERRY CHRISTMAS BELOVED COMMUNITY!
Good Evening Beloved Ones!
I want to wish you all a very Merry Christmas! I am sending you love, hope, peace, and joy! For the past two days I have been spending a wonderful time at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Santa Maria California, my home parish where I serve as a lay minister. Last evening I was the Lay Eucharistic Minister and today I served as the officiant at Morning Prayer. For two days I have been giving out shelf-stable lunches to our homeless and hungry population. The weather here has been unstable and cold. I'm hoping that the warming centers will be truly open. When one is alone at church during holiday hours there is a warm feeling of peace, hope, love, and joy. It is not at all frightening! You can feel the angels saying "Fear Not!" "Be not afraid!" This morning for our meditation, I used two poems/prayers of Howard Thurman to help us keep focused on the season. Those prayers and a few others will be our time together along with the lessons from this morning.

O Lord, how hard it is to accept your way. You come to me as a small, powerless child born away from home. You live for me as a stranger in your own land. As I prepare to celebrate your birth, I am trying to feel loved, accepted, and at home in this world, and I am trying to overcome the feelings of alienation and separation which continue to assail me. But I wonder now if my deep sense of homelessness does not bring me closer to you than my occasional feelings of belonging. Where do I truly celebrate your birth: in a cozy home or in an unfamiliar house, among welcoming friends or among unknown strangers, with feelings of well-being or with feelings of loneliness?
I do not have to run away from those experiences that are closest to yours. Just as you do not belong to this world, so I do not belong to this world. Every time I feel this way I have an occasion to be grateful and to embrace you better and taste more fully your joy and peace.

In violence and travail
We give you thanks for the babe born in violence.
We give you thanks for the miracle of Bethlehem, born into the Jerusalem heritage.
We do not understand why the innocents must be slaughtered; we know that your kingdom comes in violence and travail. Our time would be a good time for your kingdom to come, because we have had enough of violence and travail.
So we wait with eager longing, and with enourmous fear, because your promises do not coincide with our favorite injustices.
We pray for the coming of your kingdom on earth as it is around your heavenly throne.
We are a people grown weary of waiting.

God of love and creator of all we light our candles tonight in celebration of one another. We pray for each person who is praying with us during this prayer vigil and those who are not. We celebrate and pray for all of our family members who are having family celebrations and even loud and happy ones in the neighborhood. We celebrate and give thanks for all of our family members who remind us of you daily. We celebrate and give thanks for love and courage to be beacons of hope, joy, and peace to all of our family members and nations who need it. Stations of the Creche Prayers of the People
I. Mary receives word that she is to bear the Christ child.
"Be it unto me according to your Word"
Lord may we say yes to your call and walk with you in love and not fear.
II. Mary Tells Joseph her news!
"Do not be afraid Joseph to Take Mary as your wife"
Help us to not be afraid when God presents us with difficulty. May we seek to have faith and resiliency.
III. Joseph receives word about needing to go to Bethlehem to be enrolled
Lord help us to remember that we are all written in your Book of life and that we are precious to you and every hair on our heads are counted.
IV. Mary and Joseph set out on the road to Bethlehem.
Lord God we pray for all who travel and pray for safe passage wherever we go this season.
V, Mary and Joseph seek shelter as Mary goes into labor.
Lord God we pray for all who seek shelter this night and for all women who are in labor. We pray for safety for all who are the least of these our family members. May we offer our homes and hearts as shelters from any kind of storm.
VI. Mary and Joseph take shelter in a stable
Lord God it is good to be in this stable as a reminder that all living things are precious to you and that we all must eat the Bread of eternal life in new mangers as we feast with Jesus in the Holy Eucharist at God's Holy Table set with Bread and Wine.
VII Jesus is Born and is laid in a manger
Come let us adore him and give thanks that Jesus came into God's world to redeem, heal, and teach us how to be brothers and sisters one to another. We give thanks that on that most holy night we were no longer strangers but the Family of Love.
VIII. Angelic Hosts tell the Shepherds "Do not be afraid"! Follow the Star to the Manger and greet with joy the birth of the Messiah.
Lord God may we never be afraid to come and meet and greet our Lord in all persons, places, and situations.
IX. The Magi Visit Jesus, Mary, and Joseph
Lord God, teach us to be giving of our time, talents, treasures, and ourselves. Help us to give and receive the Gift of presence from you and others.
X. Herod sets out to kill the Holy Innocents.
Lord God, we pray for peace in the world and an end to violence against all your children , young and old. We pray for your holy and loving protection to surround them wherever they may be.
XI Jesus, Mary, and Joseph take flight into Egypt.
Lord God, we pray for all refugees who are fleeing wars, economic situations, religious persecution, and political uncertainty. We pray that they may return to their homes and livelihoods and if they are to stay where they have taken flight to that they may be welcomed not as strangers but as members of the family of love.
XII. Jesus, Mary and Joseph return home to Nazareth.
Lord God we pray that as we return home from work or travel that our homes may be havens of peace and places of refreshment for all of our family members.

Felgild lived in the late seventh century. After Cuthbert died, Ethilwald took his place as hermit on the Inner Farne. Twelve years later, having never left the island, he also died. Felgild was the next hermit to come there, but the rigours of his life in the cell aggravated a swelling on his face. The condition was suddenly healed, allowing him to continue the life of a solitary.
This Compline is dedicated to him because he represents so many whose names we never hear who faithfully follow the example of good men and women of old, continuing their battle against the powers of evil and in their devotion to prayer.

Today:
Today we celebrate the birth of our Saviour, Jesus Christ. The King of kings becomes a servant. The Lord of creation is laid in a cattle stall. The great Shepherd of the sheep is visited by humble shepherds. The embodiment of Wisdom is worshipped by eastern sages. The Prince of Peace is about to be plunged into conflict, the Son of Heaven to become a homeless refugee. God Himself pitches His tent among us and we will turn our backs on Him, deny and betray Him, and send Him to His death. But to those who receive Him He gives the right to be called ‘children of God’.
Let us welcome our brother, let us walk beside Him on His journey, suffer with Him, be angry with Him, share His compassion, and triumph with Him. For today is born Emmanuel – God with us: God with us forever!
I welcome You, Jesus, my brother, my dearest Friend, my King. I fold You to my breast, as Mary folded You to hers, not that I may feed You, but that You may feed me and I may grow in all that is good and true and right. Come to my heart, Emmanuel; God be with me forever. Amen.

God of love, thank you for Dr. Rojas and all the medical providers who bring sunlight to the shadows. Bless them and give them strength. Bless Dr. Rojas as he waits for asylum. Open the eyes and hearts of the immigration officials who decide asylum cases and give them clarity and courage to do the right thing. Inspire us to help as we can and fill our hearts with a generosity that overflows. Thank you for the saints in our midst and help us nurture the saint in each of us. Amen.
