Happy Juneteenth Eve on thel and of the Chumash. peoples! It has been a warm day and I am remembering so many things as one does when we are alone. 33 years ago I attended the Ordination and Consecration of The Rt. Rev. Frederick Houk Borsch as Bishop in the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles. It was also the feast of Bernard Mizeki who was a catechist and martyr in Africa. What word in the previous sentence catches your eye? Was it catechist or martyr? I was struck this time by the word catechist. So let's do our journaling and word analysis on the word catechist. Don't forget the etymology! So let us begin.

Before I was confirmed my priest used the Offices of Instruction to do this. Concerning the Catechism (BCP 844)
This catechism is primarily intended for use by parish priests, deacons,and lay catechists, to give an outline for instruction. It is a commentary
on the creeds, but is not meant to be a complete statement of belief and
practices; rather, it is a point of departure for the teacher, and it is cast in
the traditional question and answer form for ease of reference.
The second use of this catechism is to provide a brief summary of the
Church's teaching for an inquiring stranger who picks up a Prayer Book.
It may also be used to form a simple service; since the matter is arranged
under headings, it is suitable for selective use, and the leader may

God when you called us into being, you made us in your image and likeness and that we were and are to be the Lights of the World help us we pray as we light these our candles tonight to shine our love lights into places where there is darkness. Dear Lord we pray for the victims and survivors of violence and abuse.
We pray for all those who work in the areas of domestic violence and child abuse prevention.
We pray for CALM, CASA, Child Help, Silent Witness and the many organizations that help and make programs for our family members feel safe, protected, valued, loved, and remembered.
We pray for all those who are trained in SART and those who will be cared for tonight. Wrap your arms around them Lord and make them feel that they are safe.
Remembering those who have lost their lives due to gun violence.
We pray for all women who have been victims of Domestic Violence and those who have lost their lives due to domestic violence and are known only to you.
We pray for safe streets and sidewalks for all of our family members.
Remembering especially the disabled, elderly, women, and children.

We pray for our family members who have been victimized by the Santa Maria Groper.
We pray that all of us may not be afraid to get involved, speak truth to power, report incidences as both victims/survivors, and witnesses, and wear the mantles you give us when we are called to be your spokespeople and speak up on behalf of others who can't and are afraid to.
Lord God, watch over our cities, family members, and those who haven't any choice but to walk during the evening and night hours. We lift up these prayers to you O Lord. Amen.
