It is finally cooling off here in Santa Maria but it is still a tad bit muggy. I'm hoping that we return to our normal weather pattern. Now to our discussion and meditation at hand. Today we have two persons who are figures in peace making and social justice, Albert Schweitzer and Paul Jones. Satucket has our usual lessons and bios. Tonight's question for pondering is: How does social justice figure in our yearly commemoration of Labor day? The answers you come up with are between you and God. On Labor Day we remember all those who have labored in the fields and vineyards of Social Justice. Especially those who made it possible for all people who work in safe working environments. So we begin with our combined sets of lessons and a Litany for Paul Jones. We won't forget about our prayer time either.

Ephesians 2:17–22

Ephesians 1:3–10

A Litany for Paul Jones (Episcopal Peace Fellowship)
Leader: We stand before this Wall of Injustice remembering Paul Jones, Bishop of the Missionary District of Utah from 1916 – 1918. We honor his speaking out against the United States’ Involvement in World War I and revere his words: “I believe that the methods of modern international war are quite incompatible with the Christian principle of re conciliation and brotherhood.” Will you pray diligently for an end to war?
People: We will, with God’s help.
Leader: We stand before this Wall of Injustice rejoicing that Paul Jones stood firm in proclaiming the Gospel of Peace when the multitudes were clamoring for war and his fellow bishops affirmed that, “war is not unchristian.” We grieve at the outcome: Paul Jones forced to resign his seat in the House of Bishops in 1918. Will you pray that, as a church we may be converted by the witness of Paul Jones to proclaim the truth that modern warfare is incompatible with the Gospel of Christ?
People: We will, with God’s help.
Leader: We stand before this Wall of Injustice honoring Paul Jones as founder of Episcopal Peace Fellowship. We give thanks for his lifetime of peacemaking, including resettling Jews displaced by the Nazis and advocating for a greater grasp in our nation’s relations with Japan just before his death. Will you strive to embody a life of persistence in peacemaking that Bishop Jones modeled for us?
People: We will, with God’s help.
For the Diversity of Races and Cultures
O God, who created all peoples in your image, we thank you
for the wonderful diversity of races and cultures in this world.
Enrich our lives by ever-widening circles of fellowship, and
show us your presence in those who differ most from us, until
our knowledge of your love is made perfect in our love for all
your children; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
God we pray this night that we may seek to love you, our family members, enemies, neighbors, and ourselves anyway even when we do not feel like it.
God we pray that we may draw together in a circle of love even when we haven't had the energy to do so. Give us the courage to do it anyway.
God we pray that we may build bridges and tear down walls and meet each other half-way and walk together as a beginning. Let us seek to walk together wherever we are on the bridge and path as long as we do it together anyway.
God we pray that we may kind to one another regardless how we feel. Gently tap us on the shoulder to do it anyway.
God we pray that we may learn what it means to be truly family members and serve and care for the least of these and do it anyway.
God we pray this night that we may be encircled with a prayer quilt of love and that we may shine our lighted candles towards each other's faces and see your love in their eyes.
God let us pray for all of our family members through out the world and draw them into this holy circle where they will feel loved, accepted, have universal human rights, dignity and be freed from terror, bigotry, abuse, and hatred. May we help our family members who are afraid to join the circle of CALM by taking their hands gently and with a comforting embrace with encouragement be drawn in and not be made to feel invisible.
God encircle our hearts, hands, spirits, lives, and each other as we shine your light to all in this fragile and broken world. Amen.
For Agriculture
Almighty God, we thank you for making the earth fruitful, so
that it might produce what is needed for life: Bless those who
work in the fields; give us seasonable weather; and grant that
we may all share the fruits of the earth, rejoicing in your
