Monday in Holy Week: Let's have the courage be the Marys of Bethany in the World.




Good Evening Dear Family,

Another day of heart hurting with the news that came from from San Bernardino. School shootings of any kind are still heart hurters and get us more empowered to seek and end to gun violence and violence of all forms. Where does that leave us in Holy Monday in Holy Week?  In places of despair that will lead to hope on Easter day. Our feet began a journey yesterday as we walked, praised, and joined the throng with Jesus as we entered Jerusalem once again. Every year the tone is a little bit different this year we are jangled, anxious, despairing, and for what it's worth dealing with righteous anger. What we are feeling is grief over the loss of many things we are feeling not only as a nation but our own struggles in life.Today we have many different lessons and saints to choose from, 3 sets in fact: Monday in Holy Week, Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, and  William Law. Today I have chosen the lessons for the Monday in Holy Week. because we see Mary of Bethany beginning the grieving process  when she anoints Jesus' feet with expensive nard and drying them with her tears and hair. I feel we are grieving in some way and there is no right or wrong way to do it. so let's have the courage to be the Mary's of Bethany in the world. Courage, grief, service, and ministry take all forms. Remember Mary sat at Jesus feet once before, listening to him while Martha prepared the meal. Remember Martha got upset and Jesus reassured her that it was okay? Mary chose the better portion. What portion have you chosen today? 

Let us begin tonight's devotions with the Collects of the Day:

Almighty God, whose most dear Son went not up to joy but first he suffered pain, and entered not into glory before he was crucified: Mercifully grant that we, walking in the way of the cross, may find it none other than the way of life and peace; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Eternal God, the whole cosmos sings of your glory, from the dividing of a single cell to the vast expanse of interstellar space: We bless you for your theologian and scientist Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, who perceived the divine in the evolving creation. Enable us to become faithful stewards of your divine works and heirs of your eternal kingdom; through Jesus Christ, the firstborn of all creation, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

O God, by whose grace your servant William Law, kindled with the fire of your love, became a burning and shining light in your Church: Grant that we also may be aflame with the spirit of love and discipline, and may ever walk before you as children of light; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

Let us remember that our courage comes from God not only loudly but quietly. We need to seek God in the stillness and the "Be Stills'

God,light our hearts with love and justice this night as we pray for an end to hatred and division. God light our pathways to a world where we seek to know and make peace a reality not only in our hearts but in our bodies, minds, spirits, and world. We pray for that we may speak truth to power and let our leaders know that we expect them to be truthful in speech and in action. We pray that we may truly know the history of our land, our world, and yes even how we as people of faith got from point A to point B. We pray that as we light our candles and pray this night we may listen to what you are calling us to do and to be and that we may step out in faith with courage. We pray for all those who are in need of our prayers remembering_______________. We light special candles for those who are in any ICU. We pray and give thanks this day for_____________________. We light our candles and show the world that we are one shining the Light of Christ to each other in Compassion, Acceptance, Love, and Mercy and that we may have courage to call out, speak up, stand up, and lift up ourselves from fear to trust, hate to love, injustice to justice, and that we may continue to Walk With God On The Daily Journey we call life. Amen.

Hebrews 9:11-15

When Christ came as a high priest of the good things that have come, then through the greater and perfect tent (not made with hands, that is, not of this creation), he entered once for all into the Holy Place, not with the blood of goats and calves, but with his own blood, thus obtaining eternal redemption. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (the one who was about to betray him), said, "Why was this perfume not sold for three hundred denarii and the money given to the poor?" (He said this not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief; he kept the common purse and used to steal what was put into it.) Jesus said, "Leave her alone. She bought it so that she might keep it for the day of my burial. You always have the poor with you, but you do not always have me." When the great crowd of the Jews learned that he was there, they came not only because of Jesus but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. So the chief priests planned to put Lazarus to death as well, since it was on account of him that many of the Jews were deserting and were believing in Jesus.

A Song of God’s Love

1 John 4:7-11

Let us stand together as we pray for a more loving and just world.
God we pray for the innocents of Syria, Egypt, and San Bernardino. We pray for those who have died and those who have survived. Wrap your loving arms of comfort around everyone and empower the nations to do justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with you without doing harm to anyone. God help us to use words first not bombs, violence, guns, and gasses. 

Hear the cries of your children O God

God, we pray that we may stand together as one family seeking for a solution to all the violence, hatred, division, and indifference.

Hear the cries of your children O God

God we pray that we may speak truth to power when it is necessary to call people out when our brothers and sisters are slandered, verbally abused, and made fun of by senseless and harmful bullying.

Hear the cries of your children O God.

God we pray that we may serve the least of these our family members and see your face in their eyes daily may we seek to come to know you in them.

God we pray that we may console one another when we are in grief or struggle.

God we pray that we may stand up with courage when we are needed to say something and not sit idly by when we are made to feel like doormats.
