Good Evening Beloved Ones!
Happy Sunday! I hope everyone is well. I have been mulling over and mulling over what our time together should be about. I don't want it to sound repetitive from other preachers and sermons today. Today is confession time! A few days ago, I participated in a ritual naming of African-American women civil rights activists. I named the name of Diane Nash and also named Jonathan Myrick Daniels who saved a well known Civil Rights activist's life while sacrificing his own. The noted civil rights activist called me out for violating this sacred ritual. What I did was to include someone who was not on the naming list and who was a white male. As a white woman who thinks of herself as a Woke Radical Lesbian Hippie, I wouldn't have known that until I was taken to church by her. We who are white must acknowledge our complicity in racism. Period. Don't get me wrong being white isn't something we can change but we can acknowledge our whiteness and privilege that keeps us from practicing in today's collect 'true religion'. As many of our clergy today pointed out religion means something entirely different than a denomination. Here is the etymology of the word;
Middle English (originally in the sense ‘life under monastic vows’): from Old French, or from Latin religio(n- ) ‘obligation, bond, reverence’, perhaps based on Latin religare ‘to bind’.
God is continually binding us together but we keep trying to pull our grafts and stitches apart. So what does that mean in regards to racism and all the isms' and 'obias? Quite a bit! If you are an Episcopalian you should be familiar with the promises made at baptism. Maybe I should do this again with you as a reminder of what binds us all together as a sacred family of love: So let us begin:

On one occasion when Jesus was going to the house of a leader of the Pharisees to eat a meal on the sabbath, they were watching him closely.
When he noticed how the guests chose the places of honor, he told them a parable. "When you are invited by someone to a wedding banquet, do not sit down at the place of honor, in case someone more distinguished than you has been invited by your host; and the host who invited both of you may come and say to you, `Give this person your place,' and then in disgrace you would start to take the lowest place.
