I'm sorry that we didn't spend our time together last evening. I attended the City Council Meeting and got home very late and very tired. I felt it best to postpone last evening's blog because my heart monitor's data needs to be uploaded at a certain time. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. Today we honor and celebrate the wisdom of Albert Camus. His book THE PLAGUE was central in one of my papers that I wrote as a history major while at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. Camus speaks to us today and that is why he is our Wisdom Wednesday Honoree. So let us begin by pondering these quotes of his.

Felgild lived in the late seventh century. After Cuthbert died, Ethilwald took his place as hermit on the Inner Farne. Twelve years later, having never left the island, he also died. Felgild was the next hermit to come there, but the rigours of his life in the cell aggravated a swelling on his face. The condition was suddenly healed, allowing him to continue the life of a solitary.
This Compline is dedicated to him because he represents so many whose names we never hear who faithfully follow the example of good men and women of old, continuing their battle against the powers of evil and in their devotion to prayer.

Illtyd (late 5th/early 6th centuries) November 6th
Illtyd is probably the first Welsh Christian we can put a name to, but most of the accounts of the incidents in his life are not reliable. Nevertheless he was a major influence on Christianity in Wales. At one time he served as a soldier and he may have been married, but, influenced by Cadoc and/or Dyfrig, he became a monk and a hermit. Other men gathered round him and were his disciples. David (see March 1st), Samson, Gildas and Paul Aurelian (see March 12th) were among his students at Llantwit Major (in Welsh Llanilltyd Fawr) in Glamorgan. He is said to have disappeared without warning to become a hermit again. Some legends link him with Arthur or name him and Cadoc as keepers of the Grail.
Willibrord (658-739) November 7th
Born in Yorkshire, Willibrord studied in Ireland and was ordained there. He returned to England, where he planned a mission to Frisia, now in the Netherlands and north-west Germany. He was based at Utrecht and later founded a monastery at Echternach, now in Luxembourg. A step-dance has persisted in Echternach in which the clergy participate. Willibrord was noted for his graciousness and joy, and for his faithful preaching. The inspiration for his mission and his life’s work was probably hearing Wilfrid (see October 12th) at Ripon reminiscing about his own time among the people of Frisia.

We pray that we may build bridges together and tear down the walls that seek only to divide, harm, and cause us to be afraid and hate one another without cause. We pray that we may build bridges of Compassion, Acceptance, Love and Mercy beginning this night and always. Amen.
