Good Evening Brothers and Sisters!
Happy Take Care Tuesday or the day we tackle one of the hardest subjects for many of us who live in the United States- Immigration. Yes immigration regular or irregular has been around for quite some time. We needn't be in fear of "The Other!" I believe that being an American doesn't just include people who live in the U.S. It includes everyone from North near the Berring Strait in Alaska and Canada to the tip of the Tierra Del Fuego in the South. There are 3 parts to America - North, Central, and South. For thousands of years before there were nations there had been a fluidity of migration where borders were non-existent. If you live in California we have an opportunity to learn about our history and share it with others. I want to acknowledge before you that I am on the land of the Samala People (Chumash) before I continue to speak to you. We are all immigrants. Immigrants come in all shapes and sizes, (Pilgrims, Conquistadors, Explorers, Homesteaders, Asylum Seekers, Trafficking Victims, Slaves, Prospectors,Indentured Servants, Frontiersman etc.) all of these people have left their marks either negative or positive on this country. We need to see ourselves as a country of immigrants. Period. How we got here is unimportant to what we contribute daily to lives of our family members. Yes, there needs to be compassionate immigration reform of some kind but first we must seek to practice CALM principles as part of that reform( Compassion, Acceptance, Love, and Mercy).We have co-existed for years, why all the fear? Because certain leaders have led us to believe that the color of one's skin and where they came from is evil. Not true! God made us all! ALL! ALL NOT SOME! The Bible is probably the most pro- immigrant and refugee book ever written. It has given us guidelines on how to be kind and loving towards our neighbors. So tonight we will use passages from the Bible on Immigration and Refugees as our portions of scripture and meditation.

And so let us begin our time of prayer and meditation on welcoming the stranger:

God we light our candles in solidarity with refugees, visitors, and all people who are coming to this country for varying reasons. Help us to be welcoming without being fearful and needing to be divisive and indifferent. Help us to practice radical hospitality with compassion, acceptance, love, and mercy.

Gracious and loving God as we meet in community this evening to pray and light candles let us remember all of our family members who do not have community, family, where loving shoulders and soft places in which to fall are available. We pray for the lost, lonely, and afraid that they may be found and brought into the family of God and wrapped in a quilt of comfort. We pray for our family members who are refugees, asylum seekers, children in foster care, children who are seeking to be adopted and all who are waiting for their forever homes wherever that may be. We pray that we may practice radical hospitality and welcome all of our family members and especially the strangers who are in our midst. We pray that we may keep our eyes on all of our loved ones and pray that no one, not one will fall through the cracks. We pray that a community of CALM (Compassion, Acceptance, Love, and Mercy) may spring up around the world and especially where there is hatred, violence, terror, and division. We pray that peace, justice, and mercy may prevail upon Earth, that we may be peacemakers and called the Children of God. Amen.
