Good Evening Dear Ones!
Happy Take Care Tuesday! I certainly have done that today. I have spent two days of rest and relaxation in order to bank my energy for a busy season to come. Enough said about that. Today is Rogation Day II. What does Rogation mean? Here is a definition from the Episcopal Church's website:
Rogation Days
Traditionally, these are the three days before Ascension Day on which the litany is sung (or recited) in procession as an act of intercession. They originated in Vienne, France, in the fifth century when Bishop Mamertus introduced days of fasting and prayer to ward off a threatened disaster. In England they were associated with the blessing of the fields at planting. The vicar "beat the bounds" of the parish, processing around the fields reciting psalms and the litany. In the United States they have been associated with rural life and with agriculture and fishing. The propers in the BCP (pp. 207-208, 258-259, 930) have widened their scope to include commerce and industry and the stewardship of creation. The BCP also permits their celebration at other times to accommodate different regional growing seasons. The BOS contains material for a Rogation procession, including petitions to be added to the Great Litany and the prayers of the people. The term is from the Latin rogatio, "asking."

This is a good time as we head into the last half of the year to be reminded of those who labor in the fields, harvest times especially during this period of severe weather, commerce and industry as we seek to reduce global warming and our carbon foot print, and a general acknowledgment of being good stewards of creation. Tonight our lessons come from Rogation Day II. Let us ponder the word asking.

Those who work in the provision of utilities
All seeing God, we turn on our taps, switch on the light and take for granted the energy, clean water and communications that have become part of our everyday lives. We tend only to notice the army of people that make it happen when things go wrong, and can easily forget the dangers they face as they travel to remote and hostile places, face blizzard and storm to restore broken lines, and constantly strive to meet our ever increasing demand while seeking to protect the earth’s fragile resources. We realise too that there are many places in the world where the services that we consider essential are still a distant dream. May we always be grateful for that which we have, use it responsibly and show due appreciation to those who provide it. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. AMEN
