Good Evening Beloved Community,
Happy Memorial Day and Rogation Day 1. As I sit here pondering what I am about to say to you about this day, I find as I age hard to celebrated this national day of remembrance without pangs of anger and grief. Yes anger and grief. The anger I feel is for all the lives lost in unnecessary wars and conflicts. Grief for the families whose lives were rent asunder by bombs, bullets, families maimed by agent orange , those missing in action, and those who suffer from PTSD. Day after day I see veterans who are homeless coming by the window for lunches and who live in homeless encampments down by the levee. We can do better than this people. I also want us to remember those who by conscience decided not to fight in wars. They were and are models of non-violent valor. Today we pay tribute to those who served our country. We aren't limiting it to the military men and women we are expanding to those who are first responders who are close to the battlefields of daily living. Our lessons are from the first day of Rogation- more on that tomorrow. We ponder these quotes from many sources.

For Prisons and Correctional Institutions
Lord Jesus, for our sake you were condemned as a criminal:
Visit our jails and prisons with your pity and judgment.
Remember all prisoners, and bring the guilty to repentance
and amendment of life according to your will, and give them
hope for their future. When any are held unjustly, bring them
release; forgive us, and teach us to improve our justice.
Remember those who work in these institutions; keep them
humane and compassionate; and save them from becoming
brutal or callous. And since what we do for those in prison,
O Lord, we do for you, constrain us to improve their lot. All
this we ask for your mercy's sake. Amen.

Almighty God, you proclaim your truth in every age by many

Those who work in the provision of utilities
All seeing God, we turn on our taps, switch on the light and take for granted the energy, clean water and communications that have become part of our everyday lives. We tend only to notice the army of people that make it happen when things go wrong, and can easily forget the dangers they face as they travel to remote and hostile places, face blizzard and storm to restore broken lines, and constantly strive to meet our ever increasing demand while seeking to protect the earth’s fragile resources. We realise too that there are many places in the world where the services that we consider essential are still a distant dream. May we always be grateful for that which we have, use it responsibly and show due appreciation to those who provide it. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. AMEN
For the Victims of Addiction
O blessed Lord, you ministered to all who came to you: Look
with compassion upon all who through addiction have lost
their health and freedom. Restore to them the assurance of
your unfailing mercy; remove from them the fears that beset
them; strengthen them in the work of their recovery; and to
those who care for them, give patient understanding and
persevering love. Amen.
For Heroic Service
O Judge of the nations, we remember before you with grateful
hearts the men and women of our country who in the day of
decision ventured much for the liberties we now enjoy. Grant
that we may not rest until all the people of this land share the
benefits of true freedom and gladly accept its disciplines. This

Give your blessing, gracious God, to those whom you have called

For Survivors of Abuse and Violence
Holy One, you do not distance yourself from the pain of your
people, but in Jesus bear that pain with us and bless all who suffer
