A feast for the senses ! The arts as a way to connect with the holy.

Dear Family of Love!

I hope everyone had a wonderful Sunday! These past few days have been fabulous! The arts are so important for our existence. They give us experiences that will make us think and feel. Last evening I had the opportunity to hear Pomerium a world renown a' capella group sing sacred motets that would have been sung during the time of Reuben's Tapestries -The Triumph of the Eucharist at the Getty Center. The music transported me back to the Baroque period and  as they sang I could almost smell incense and feel the parchment that the motets were written on. You almost had the feeling of attending a service where there was Eucharistic Adoration, monstrance and all. Today I went to the Getty Villa and had the opportunity to see Roman Silver and Funerary Vases from Italy. Since I arrived early I had time to see more places where I hadn't before. When you visit the Getty Villa you are immediately brought to a place of rest, refreshment, and renewal. The whole venue is a place to take in meditative silence and I think anyone who would want to could go on a day of quiet retreat and reflection. The final piece of the arts was a play at the P.C. P.A. called The Community Speaks voices of the invisible.  It is in the style of verbatim theater which in plain English meant that the stories that were told by actors  were from the mouths and thoughts of our marginalized family members in Santa Maria. Powerful. I will no longer think of myself as invisible after seeing this one time only performance. What does all this mean to us? It means that the arts are a way to connect us to all that is holy. Music patches us in to the celestial choir. Art of all kinds helps us to see God as the master artist and craftsman in our lives. Theater  gives us a place to see God's reflection in stories that give us time to think, absorb, and dial into our hearts. We have so many ways to See, hear, and be in God's presence. Truly what I have experienced in the last few days was a feast for the senses and a journey into the holy.  Have the arts touched you in the same way? Tonight let us meditate on this and have a brief period of prayer. Fir our meditation music- Pomerium -Ave Maris Stella

Dear God we pray this night that we feel your presence in everywhere that we live, move, and just be.

God may we see you in the  arts and recognize that  you are the Master Musician, Artist, Writer, and Choreographer in our lives, creation, and throughout the world and universe.

God we earnestly pray for rain and and end to all the drought parched areas of the world and in our country.

God help us to sing your praises daily and that our songs may rise to the heavens!

God we pray for all who are in need of healing now and ongoing. We pray and give thanks to you for your being the Master Healer of us all.

God we pray for peace in this world may we sit at your feet and learn to become better at peace making and that we may become truly your children.

God give us times of rest, refreshment, and renewal so that we may serve you with strength renewed.

God help us all to cast off our feelings of invisibility and put on courageous visibility and that we may  speak truth to power and empower the voiceless to speak.

God we pray for all who are grieving and pre-grieving the loss of loved ones this time of year.

God we pray for ourselves and on behalf of those who have asked us for our prayers. We now pray_________

God we lift up these our prayers in the name of your only son Jesus. Amen.
